Beginner Patchwork Sampler quilt with Sallieann Harrison - Block 5
Classes with Sallieann Harrison • Educational, G, 15-Oct-2021
This traditional block is created with strips sewn around a central square. The folk-lore has it used to represent the fireplace of the log cabin, so would be sewn with red fabric. Then lit half the cabin (the light side) and threw the other half into shade (dark fabric). The colours used by Sallieann still reflect this concept.
Sallieann takes you through the various stages. She suggests that once cut, you lay your fabric pieces out in front of you in their sewing order. This will prove to be less confusing as you progress sewing the logs on. You must remember you have two light and 2 dark for each round.
The log cabin block remains a favourite of Valerie and in her Log Cabin workshop you get to learn a really quick way of making several at a time .
If you are struggling with an accurate 1/4″ seam allowance, you might find this workshop with Valerie Nesbitt helpful click here.
