Single Irish Chain Patchwork Quilt Design with Valerie Nesbitt
Classes with Valerie Nesbitt • Educational, G, 18-Mar-2022
Valerie shares a rotary cut, strip pieced, single Irish chain quilt in 2 colours. There is also an adaptation for a 3 colour quilt, and workshop notes for subscribed members.
Instead of using the traditional block method of cutting lots of small squares, Valerie demonstrates the nine patch block utilising strip sets.
Valerie explains:
how to line up the ruler to the centre strip to ensure that squares are accurate
the importance of trimming, squaring off and nesting seams
an accurate cutting technique to deal with bowed strip pieces caused by the natural drag of the sewing machine.
To complete the quilt, Valerie suggests a simple way of creating a two-colour strip border the same size as the corner nine patch.
The book that originally inspired Valerie is out of print but the Eleanor Burns: Quilt in a Day books have a wide variety of titles that are all based on rotary cutting and include some on Irish chain.
