Sail Away Quilt with Valerie Nesbitt
FREE Tasters (Quilting) • Educational, G, 05-Jun-2020
The nine-block quilt from Lynne Goldsworthy uses the picture panels of this Makower range to great effect. Lynne has linked these with making some traditional Ohio Star blocks, which she uses in the corners and the centre, and then the landscape border is a quick fix.
Valerie takes you through some of the steps to make this quilt. You can click here to download the Sail-Away pattern for free download from Makower. Valerie guides you through the stages of making the Ohio Star block, which uses fast quarter-square triangles. She shows a great tip on how to keep the centre of this unit perfectly aligned, and then you use your square-up ruler to make this the same size as the plain cut squares.
Valerie also suggests making the patchwork units of your quilt first, so that you can then make the panel squares the same size.
Lynne loves to use really thin sashing, which can be challenging when sewing an accurate 1/4", but again Valerie has a great idea on how to overcome this, so that you end up with beautiful 1/2" sashing.
So with Valerie's help you can create a quilt identical to that designed by Lynne, or vary the units to your own design, say 4 stars and 5 panels plus border.
