TASTER: Dala Horses Quilt with Anne Baxter
FREE Tasters (Quilting) • Educational, G, 29-Jul-2022
Simple fused applique, which you could fussy cut, create the lovely Dala horses. Anne uses the simple half square triangle unit to create both the windmill blocks and the pieced zig-zag border in this delightful 9 block quilt. There is clever use of some fabric to create the sashing.
Anne talks you through the fused applique horses, and she says you need an open-toed applique foot. Sharing with us the stitch and threads she likes to use and why.
On the wonderfully scrappy half square triangle units, she quickly reminds us of how to create two at a time. Trimming back so that each unit is accurate.
Anne also shares with us a quick and clever way to create the horizontal sashing. Cleverly fussy cutting from some fabric. This could be re-created by adding simple Ric-Rac on top of a plain border.
When making up the windmill star, do ensure that they all spin in the same direction. In the border Anne shows you a clever trick to help keep the pattern correct with a simple stitch-n-flip block.
Moreover, you could follow Anne's idea of hand quilting the quilt, although she does say that it nearly killed her and took ages, but simple machine quilting with the help of your walking foot would work just as well.
