Welsh Wholecloth Quilts
The Town Hall in Lampeter, Ceredigion, Wales is now home to the Welsh Quilt Centre and this exhibition of antique welsh quilts was on display at the same time as the Kaffe Fassett Exhibition. You can see more of that by clicking here.
In this wonderful tour Jen takes the time to tell us the stories behind this stunning collection of welsh wholecloth quilts – who they belonged to and how they were made, the charming symbolism.
This is just a selection of the quilts that have been collected by Jen over the past 40 years, who is devoted to saving this textile welsh heritage.
The wonderful archive photographs we have shown are on display courtesy at the centre courtesy of St Fagans National History Museum, which is an open-air museum in Cardiff chronicling the historical lifestyle, culture, and architecture of the Welsh people. You can find more information about St Fagans National History Museum on their website.
You can tour the shop that is housed on the ground floor of the Welsh Quilt centre and at one time housed the courtroom by clicking here.
More About the Welsh Quilt Centre
The Jen Jones Welsh Quilt Centre opened in Lampeter Town Hall in 2009 to celebrate the Welsh Quilt and to promote a wider understanding of the importance of this regional art form.
Here you can enjoy stunning exhibitions of Welsh Quilts in the gallery, attend quilt-related courses or just browse the intriguing Welsh Quilt Centre Gallery Shop. The original cottage shop in Llanybydder also remains open.
We hope that we can bring the attention of the world to this wonderful craft a put the Welsh quilt into the context of the farms, valleys and towns where they were made. The centre also provides a focus for a historical archive of Welsh Quilting in Wales and the wider world.
The Jen Jones Welsh Quilt Centre is a private venture. The Welsh Assembly provided a business development grant to cover part of the initial funding and Cadw grant aided the historic building repairs. The Centre is actively seeking more funding for ongoing development of the project.
